Born in Mumbai in 1974, Dr Amit Thadhani grew up in a Sindhi family with his parents and elder brother. His father is a businessman and mother a well renowned advocate practising in Mumbai High Court and Supreme Court. After his schooling he completed his MBBS from P Dr D Y Patil Medical College and his post graduation in General Surgery from LTMGH & LTMMC (Lokmanya Tilak Memorial General Hospital and Medical College), Sion, Mumbai.He married his MBBS classmate Anjana, now a renowned developmental paediatrician, while they were pursuing their residency at LTMGH. They have two daughters. His elder daughter took to the parents’ profession and is now pursuing MD Paediatrics at a prestigious government medical college. The younger is pursuing her BBA, LLB from a top institution.
Over the next few years, Dr Thadhani obtained his Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery from Nagpur and Fellowship in Bariatric Surgery from Coimbatore. He also trained in flexible gastrointestinal endoscopy and has been performing upper and lower GI endoscopies for the past two decades. He started his private practice and opened a 16-bed nursing home in Chembur in 2002 and a 76-bed hospital in Navi Mumbai in 2009. He obtained his FIAGES in 2022 from Mumbai. He was President of Indian Medical Association Chembur Branch for two terms. He has also served on the Managing Committee of the Association of Medical Consultants. He is a MUHS-registered teacher for medical and paramedical students. At present he is Head of Department of General Surgery at Sushrut Hospital & Research Centre, Chembur, Mumbai. He also has his own clinic at Chembur.
Dr Amit and Dr Anjana Thadhani started their non-profit, Prime Education Health Learning Services (PEHL) in 2011. The trust works in two states, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Its fields of activity include rural healthcare, education and counselling of destitute and underprivileged children, livelihood generation, nutrition and sanitation. In 2013, Dr Amit Thadhani led two teams for flood relief in Uttarakhand. In 2015, his team was one of the first on ground in Sindhupalchowk, Nepal, when it was devastated by a massive earthquake, treating over 3500 patients over three weeks. His team also served in flood hit areas of Tamil Nadu in 2015 and Kerala in 2018. PEHL has treated over 15,000 people free of cost over the years.

In the year 2020, the world was struck by the COVID pandemic. As the first wave hit the country, Dr Amit and Dr Anjana Thadhani converted their hospital into a COVID hospital, putting their lives on the line yet again and treating over 2500 patients over the next year. During this time, Dr Amit wrote articles on several aspects related to COVID and appeared on many television discussions. He was the first to point out the onset of the second wave as early as 15th February 2021 and also the first to raise the serious issue of the oxygen shortage faced by hospitals in the first and second waves. Via Project Sharan, PEHL supports the education of 80 children who lost their family’s primary bread-earner to COVID. While most of these children are still in need of long-term support, a few of the beneficiaries have now completed their higher education with the help of grants from PEHL and are now independently supporting their families.

He is an avid guitarist, Himalayan trekker, and birder. In May 2025, Dr Thadhani was conferred the SanatanShree Award for his notable contributions to society.
